Strengthening science through collaborative expertise and review

Since 1974, the European Science Foundation (ESF) has cultivated a strong network of international academics, science policy experts, and key stakeholders across the European and global research landscape. Building on this legacy, ESF continues to expand its activities in grant evaluation and research assessment by bringing together leading researchers within its Community of Experts and College of Research Associates.

This dynamic community of specialists plays a vital role in supporting ESF’s high-quality, responsive peer review and evaluation services.

  • Experts may be invited to act as reviewers for research project proposals, fellowship applications, or academic promotion candidates. They may also be called upon to serve on review panels convened to evaluate and select research proposals in dedicated meetings.
  • Research Associates support ESF in identifying experts. From across all scientific disciplines, they allow us to streamline and enhance our peer review processes by maintaining the excellence and credibility of our evaluation activities and in supporting the broader scientific ecosystem. They collaborate with ESF on a consultancy basis and remotely.

The College of Expert Reviewers

Expert Reviewers provide scientific assessments and evaluations in their domain of expertise. They are active researchers who are recognised experts with in-depth scientific knowledge in a specific area and strong credentials in their discipline.

The College of Review Panel Members

A selection of experienced members of the College of Expert Reviewers are invited to join the College of Review Panel members. These experts use their broad expertise to build consensus on the scientific merit of research proposals during dedicated in-person or virtual meetings.

The College of Research Associates

Research Associates collaborate with ESF on a consultancy basis and for a specific project, limited in time. This includes:

  • Identifying Expert Reviewers in order to assess research projects proposals and fellowships applications
  • Providing a quality check of peer-review reports
  • Performing other related tasks as appropriate (ie: supporting review panels and their Chairs)

We always look for the best-fit of expertise for each review assignment, taking into consideration the expert’s area of expertise, discipline, experience and availability - and of course potential biases or conflicts of interest.

Experts are asked to upload (or update) their scientific profile on our web portal. This facilitates the efficient assignment of experts to proposals.

Review panel members are selected from experienced members of the College of Expert Reviewers.
